By using electricity from renewable energy sources in the production of Degacryl specialty acrylates in Darmstadt, Evonik’s Coating & Adhesive Resins Business Line has been saving around 1400 tonnes of CO2 per year since the beginning of this year.

As part of its sustainability strategy, Evonik has decided to cover the electricity requirements for the production of Degacryl speciality acrylics in Darmstadt entirely with renewable energy. “In addition to a strong focus on products that enable more sustainable solutions for our customers through the handprint, this also includes reducing Degacryl’s carbon footprint,” says Dr Claudia Meister, Head of Specialty Acrylics.

With lower CO2 emissions, the business line will contribute to achieving its own sustainability goals and at the same time fulfil market requirements: “Our customers are increasingly asking for sustainably manufactured products. We can now support them even better in this area and reduce our Scope 1/2 emissions at the same time,” says Meister.

The supply of electricity from renewable energy sources is ensured via green electricity certificates and special supply contracts known as Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
