Recommended products: Findunm New Material Cationic Waterborne Polyurethane

2024年03月05日09:25 来源:无

The distinctive feature of cationic waterborne polyurethane comes from its cationic properties, and its applications are mostly based on these ionic characteristics. Due to its positive charge, it exhibits excellent adsorption and adhesion properties, and is widely used in leather base coat coatings, wood paint sealing coatings, metal coatings, adhesives, digital printing ink-receiving layers, personal care products, fabric finishing agents, and more.

About Cationic Waterborne Polyurethane

Cationic waterborne polyurethanes refer to a class of polyurethanes that incorporate nitrogen-containing cationic groups in the main chain or side chain of the polyurethane molecule. Hydrophilic cationic groups can be ammonium ions, thiol ions, and phosphonium ions.

Common cationic groups include tertiary amine ions and quaternary ammonium ions. These cationic groups allow the polyurethane molecules to form stable colloidal dispersions in water.

2、Cationic Waterborne Polyurethane Synthesis

Synthesis Method

In order to obtain cationic polyurethanes with excellent performance, researchers have been continuously exploring synthesis methods. Currently, there are mainly two approaches to introduce nitrogen-containing cationic groups through polymerization:

01、Using amine-based chain extenders:

After introducing these groups, hydrophilic ions are formed through acid neutralization.

Using the Menschutkin reaction to introduce quaternary ammonium ions on the side chains of polyurethanes, quaternization forms hydrophilic groups.

Tips:

The formation of salts through acid neutralization is reversible, especially when using volatile acids such as acetic acid or hydrochloric acid. On the other hand, quaternization is permanent.

Synthesis Process

1. PTMG and IPDI are reacted at 102-107°C for about 1 hour under dry nitrogen protection.

2. The reaction temperature is cooled to 77°C, and MDEA is added. The reaction mixture is stirred at 79-85°C for 40 minutes to prepare a prepolymer with NCO end-capping.

3. The mixture is cooled to 51°C, and HAc is added with stirring.

4. The neutralized prepolymer is added to water containing EDA to form a water dispersion of cationic NCO end-capped polyurethane prepolymer.

5. The remaining NCO reacts with water overnight to prepare a stable water dispersion of cationic polyurethane that is clear (without condensation and flocculation).
