Arkema has started construction of a state-of-the-art distillation unit at its production site in Carling, France. The EUR 130 million investment aims to improve energy efficiency by 25% and reduce the carbon intensity of production by 20%. The optimised purification process should also optimise raw material use and waste management.
Construction of the new plant, which began in 2024, presents a major engineering challenge. The installation of giant distillation columns, each of which is 60 metres long and weighs 150 tonnes, required extensive logistical planning. The new unit is designed to increase the site’s production capacity while implementing more environmentally friendly processes.
Important site for the acrylates industry
Around 100 of the site’s 385 employees are currently working on the project to construct the new unit. Up to 200 workers are expected to be needed, including external specialists from various technical fields. The new purification plant is scheduled to come on stream in 2026.
