A research team has investigated the impact of poss compounds as additives in nanohybrid coatings based on urethane acrylate, showing improvements in thermal and mechanical properties.
In a recent research project, the authors explored the use of poss-enhanced nanohybrid materials based on a UV-curable urethane acrylate (UA) resin. The materials were developed by combining poss-vinyl-heptaisobutyl-substituted (POSSV) compounds with UA resins cured through UV radiation, aiming to enhance the thermal, mechanical, and optical properties of the coatings.
The team employed a range of analytical methods: the structure of the UA resin was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Hardness and other properties were assessed through thermogravimetric analysis and other methods, such as light transmittance by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and scanning electron microscopy.
Broad application potential for the coatings industry
These nanohybrid materials proved promising in terms of thermal stability and non-flammability. Their high resistance to chemicals and solvents could make them an innovative material for functional coatings. The use of POSSV compounds also enabled higher hardness and improved adhesion, making them suitable for various industrial applications.
