Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings, a global leader in protective coatings solutions for gigafactories, announces the launch of a dedicated line of comprehensive flooring systems engineered to meet and exceed the demands of electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing.

With the continued growth and investment in EV battery production, the need for protective coatings for these highly complex manufacturing facilities is paramount to ensuring product, process and personnel safety. When standard epoxy floors are subjected to N-Methyl-2-pyrroli done (NMP), the results can be full deterioration of the coating. Additionally, a lack of static control and slip resistance can increase the risk of damage to the workers and sensitive electronic components during production. This is why Sherwin-Williams is offering advanced NMP systems, as well as a reliable electrostatic discharge (ESD) and conductive protection system. These systems are specifically designed for both clean and dry rooms within EV battery manufacturing facilities.

The right flooring solutions play a critical role in these environments, where precision and reliability are non-negotiable. The portfolio of EV battery manufacturing flooring systems from Sherwin-Williams offers several key features:

  •  Chemical resistance: Engineered to withstand advanced exposure to corrosive chemicals commonly used in battery manufacturing processes, like NMP, and tested to ASTM D1308 for up to 14 days under glass.
  •  ESD and conductive protection: Designed to dissipate static electricity safely, according to the ESD Association Standard for the Protection of Electrostatic Discharge Susceptible Items.
  •  Moisture vapor control: Systems include specialty primers and basecoats that prevent concrete moisture vapor from entering the environment - a feature critical to maintaining the tight relative humidity standards of cleanrooms and dry rooms.
  •  Fast installation: Products can be applied to green concrete, reducing the required substrate cure time from 28 to seven days, allowing for earlier installation and quicker site access to other trades.
  •  Slip resistance: With a slip coefficient rating that is 70% higher than the industry standard balanced to enable cleanability, Sherwin-Williams systems help guard against many spill hazards.

"Our resinous flooring systems are essential in safeguarding plant floors, workers and high-risk zones in EV battery manufacturing facilities," said Casey Ball, Global Market Director for Flooring with Sherwin-Williams. "At Sherwin-Williams, we are committed to providing revolutionary solutions that enable manufacturers to operate at the highest level of efficiency and safety."

The launch of the EV battery manufacturing flooring systems marks yet another milestone for Sherwin-Williams in its commitment to deliver industry-leading solutions that help get more EVs on the road faster. Developing these systems, along with new approaches such as shop-applied fireproofing, continues to place Sherwin-Williams at the forefront of technological advancement in the protective coatings and flooring industry.
