Researchers found that the integration of bio-based PAbz@PBA hybrids into intumescent flame retardant epoxy coatings significantly improves fire safety properties, toxic gas suppression and mechanical performance.

The research proves that the EP-5%PAbz@PBA coating is more efficient in reducing the peak heat release rate by 48.3%, the total heat release rate by 34.0% and the total amount of smoke by 35.9% compared to the epoxy coating alone. In addition, the CO production rate is reduced by 39.6 % and the thermal insulation performance is improved with the lowest backside temperature of 66.3 °C.  Source: Ян Заболотний - adobe.stock.com

In recent years, developing bio-based intumescent flame-retardant (IFR) epoxy coatings for fire protection of steel has become a research hotspot. However, how to endow bio-based IFR epoxy coatings with excellent fire protection, toxic gas suppression, and mechanical properties simultaneously remains a formidable challenge. Here, a bio-based IFR hybrid with the maize structure (PAbz@PBA) was easily constructed by an organic-inorganic hybrid strategy and employed to prepare high-performance IFR epoxy coatings.
