The explosion of PX and PTA in Taipei Plastic Sixth Light Factory will be deeply affected

On the afternoon of April 7, the LPG pipeline burst in the No. 3 Liuqingtaihua Aromatic Hydrocarbon Plant of Taiyuan Plastics Co., Ltd. in Mailiao, Yunlin. At present, the third aromatic hydrocarbon plant has been forced to shut down.

Taiyuan Plastics Co., Ltd. is located in the Sixth Light Industrial Zone of Mailiao. It has three sets of cracking units. Its No. 1 cracking unit has designed capacity of 700,000 tons/year for ethylene and 350,000 tons/year for propylene; No. 2 unit has designed capacity of 103,000 tons/year for ethylene and 515,000 tons/year for propylene; No. 3 unit has designed capacity of 1.2 million tons/year for ethylene and 600,000 tons/year for propylene.

According to the Ibuychem’s Research Institute monitor, the main impact of the accident is aromatic hydrocarbon plant 3. China's imports of PX from Taiwan are about 1.5 million tons per year, accounting for about 10% of the total imports. Taiyuan Plastics Co. Ltd. is located in Mailiao, Yunlin, with capacity of 270,000 tons per year, 580,000 tons per year and 870,000 tons per year, respectively. If all three sets of PX plants stop, it is estimated that the output of PX will be affected by 140,000 tons per month. In the case of tight PX supply, it will benefit its downstream PTA.

Whether the accident has an impact on ethylene, propylene and other devices will continue to be the focus of the Purchasing, Chemical and Plastic Research Institute.
